Men's Basketball Season Comes to a Close as Coker Clinches Final Playoff Spot with 88-74 Road Win over Falcons
February 24, 2012
MISENHEIMER, N.C. Ė A reverse dunk by Sharod Williams (Miami, FL) with 1:32 remaining would help seal the deal as Coker College went on to claim an 88-74 victory over Pfeiffer University in Conference Carolinas menís basketball action on Friday night. The win gives the Cobras the east divisionís fourth and final playoff spot moving to 14-12, 8-8 on the season while the Falcons season comes to a close at 12-14, 6-10.
Both teams traded six lead changes in the first half with Williams hitting a baseline jumper at the buzzer to send the teams into the locker room all tied up 36-36. Before that, Pfeiffer saw its largest lead in the first 20 minutes come at the halfway point as a Reggie Hollinger (Orlando, FL) three-point play put the Falcons up 15-11.
Just three and a half minutes later, the Cobras would turn that into their own four point lead on a layup by Williams. Coker went up six moments later until a Josh Humphrey (Matthews, NC) layup and pair of Danny Smith (Baltimore, MD) free throws got the hosts to within striking distance.
In the second half, Coker came roaring out to an 11-point, 49-38 lead thanks to a pair of Andrew Morris (Melbourne, AUSTRALIA) triples in the first 3:41. Smith would help slice the deficit down to three with 12:09 to go on his fast-break jumper, but the Cobras would again respond with a 9-2 spurt using six points from Charles West (Ellenwood, GA) over the next 85 seconds.
Again, getting the Coker lead down to four on two more Hollinger shots from the charity stripe, the Cobras would once again knock down crucial shots leading up to Williamsí game-changing dunk.
The Cobras shot 52% in the win backed by Williamsí 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting to go along with his 15 rebounds. Julian Nelson (Irmo, SC) followed closely with 22. Pfeiffer, led by Smithís 23, shot just 37% in the season ending loss.
