Ellen Provides Walk-Off Single in Game One; Softball Settles for Split with Davis & Elkins
March 9, 2012
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer University and visiting Davis & Elkins College split a Friday afternoon softball doubleheader with the Lady Falcons winning the opener 2-1 in nine innings before the Senators came back for a 5-3 win in the nightcap. Pfeiffer moves to 7-15 overall on the year while Davis & Elkins advances to 12-8.
Tied at one entering the bottom of the ninth, a sacrifice bunt by Melanie Conklin (Wellington, OH) would move Celia Dew (Sanford, NC) over to third as Dew started the inning at second base due to softball’s international tiebreaker rule. Ashlee Ellen (Jacksonville, FL) would then line an 0-1 pitch back up the middle into center field scoring Dew with the game-winner.
Solo home runs led to each team’s runs in regulation as Carissa Dunn (Modesto, CA) blasted hers to straight-away center in the second for the Senators while Conklin bounced hers off and over the top of the right field fence in the fifth. Shelby Brown (South Hill, VA) picked up the win tossing the complete game allowing just the one run on eight hits with three strikeouts. Both teams combined to strand 24 runners in game one, 14 by Pfeiffer.
In game two, Dunn would propel the Senators to a 3-0 lead in the first with a two-run double to right while Bridget Ours (Moorefield, WV) plated Dunn with an infield single off of Lady Falcon started Lindsey Russell (Huntersville, NC). After Pfeiffer got one back in the third as Dew scored on a stolen base by Hannah Jackson (Greensboro, NC) and the throw ending up in center, Davis & Elkins would grab the two eventual game-winners in their half of the fifth.
Mallory Wishard (Waynesboro, PA) would drive in the two runs with a double that just snuck inside the third base bag scoring Corrine Carrington (Vacaville, CA) and Daniella Vineyard (Atwater, CA). The final Lady Falcon runs would come in their home half of the fifth on a Tyresha Ellis (Jefferson, SC) two-bagger to left-center. Autumn Appleby (Greencastle, PA) scored the win in the circle surrendering three runs on five hits, but fanned five in the win.
Pfeiffer will quickly get back to action on Saturday hosting West Liberty at 2:00 p.m.
