Harris Provides Second-Straight Walk-Off in Game One; Baseball Earns Weekend Series Win over North Greenville
March 17, 2012
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer University and visiting North Greenville University split a Conference Carolinas baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon with the Falcons claiming a 3-2 walk-off win in game one while the Crusaders took advantage of five errors to roll 13-5 in game two. Pfeiffer improves to 16-11, 7-5 in league play winning the weekend series while North Greenville moves to 17-10, 9-3.
In the ninth of game one, Aarin Sharpe (Winterville, FL) started with a leadoff single to right-center and moved to second on Jacob Yates’ (Blairs, VA) sacrifice bunt. Two hitters later, Jon Gray (Granite Falls, NC) would keep the inning alive reaching on an error by third baseman Taylor Hollifield (Boiling Springs, SC). Hollifield’s boot would come bite to hurt the Crusaders as Justin Harris rolled a 40-foot groundball down the third-base line, coming to rest right on the white line for a walk-off single, his second in as many days.
North Greenville would score two early runs in the second as Pfeiffer started their comeback in the seventh. A Yates fielder’s choice would bring in Matt Wade (Chapel Hill, NC) while a Kevin Price (Asheville, NC) drag bunt single on a safety squeeze would bring home the game-tying run in Preston Lyon (Gastonia, NC). Craig Bolton (Shelby, NC) picked up the win in relief tossing the top of the ninth, allowing just a hit with two strikeouts. Bolton’s perfect ERA remains intact after his 15th appearance of the season on Saturday.
In game two, North Greenville would exploit five Pfeiffer errors in their 13-5 win leading to unearned tallies scoring at-least once in each of the seven frames of game two. The Falcons would tag starter Ryan Woodring (Asheville, NC) for five runs in game two starting with two in the bottom of the second.
Sharpe and Price would each collect RBI-singles in the second scoring Cole McGraw (Claremont, NC) and Wade. A two-run double by Lyon in the sixth and a final run-scoring single by Sharpe would complete the run-scoring for the Falcons. Harris would finish the day with four hits in seven trips to the plate while Sharpe finished with three hits along with Price.
Pfeiffer will now begin a season-long six-game road trip starting Tuesday night at Lenoir-Rhyne. Live stats from Hickory will be available through http://www.gofalconsports.com.
