April 1, 2012
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Barton College’s first two hitters in Ryan Daughtry (Princeton, NC) and Chris Rawlings (Charlotte, NC) combined for a 6-for-8 day at the plate with three RBI, a pair of walks and seven runs scored during a 10-6 victory over Pfeiffer University in Conference Carolinas baseball action on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs avoid the weekend sweep by improving to 12-21 overall, 4-12 in league play, while the Falcons drop to 19-16, 10-8.
Daughtry and Rawlings didn’t waste any time getting things going with back-to-back singles to start the game. Both would later score on a Phillip Williams (Gibson, NC) double down the left field line and single up the middle by Collins Cuthrell (Rocky Mount, NC). Pfeiffer’s first run of the day came in the second on a Jacob Yates (Blairs, VA) sacrifice fly to left.
Barton would add two more in the third on Cuthrell’s second of four RBI on the day via groundout to third and a Zac Crumpler (Wilson, NC) RBI-single to left. The Falcons would turn momentum around with four in the bottom half of the frame to take a 5-4 lead.
Pfeiffer’s third started with a Justin Harris (Albany, NY) infield single, Preston Lyon (Gastonia, NC) walk and Jon Gray (Granite Falls, NC) bunt single towards third. Harris would tally the first run on a wild pitch before Dalton Lindley (Siler City, NC) delivered with a two-run single to right. Aarin Sharpe (Winterville, NC) finished the frame with a run-scoring single to left plating Lindley.
Both teams would be very quiet at the plate through the middle three innings until Barton took control with four in the seventh and two in the eighth. With runners at second and third, one out, Rawlings dropped down a safety squeeze bunt while the throw to the plate got away allowing both Matthew Berry (Rocky Mount, NC) and Daughtry to score the go-ahead runs. Cuthrell would conclude the inning with a massive two-run shot to left.
Rawlings would finish the Bulldog scoring with a two-run single in the eighth while Pfeiffer’s final run came in the ninth on a Lyon RBI-double to left. Lyon would lead the Falcons at the plate putting together a 3-for-4 day with his RBI and run scored while Harris, Lindley and Sharpe each recorded two hit days.
Pfeiffer returns home on Wednesday to face Wingate in non-conference action beginning at 3:00 p.m. Live stats will be available through http://www.gofalconsports.com.
