Wooten and Lancellot Power the Offense as Women's Volleyball Scores Second-Straight 3-1 Conference Victory
October 6, 2012
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Backed by 10 kills and hitting percentage of .500 by middle hitter Kelly Lancellot (Naples, FL), Pfeiffer University scored their second-straight victory with a 3-1 (25-20, 19-25, 25-16, 25-23) decision over visiting Mount Olive College on Saturday afternoon. The win pushes the Lady Falcons to 4-12 overall, 3-5 in league play while the Trojans dip to 7-11, 3-6.
In the opening set, Mount Olive bounced out to a quick 5-0 lead before a Taylor Houser (Mount Holly, NC) ace and kill by Milana Mervosh (Roebuck, SC) quickly brought the Lady Falcons back even at 6-6. Trailing 10-9 after another Mervosh kill, Pfeiffer would take advantage of six-straight Mount Olive errors, which included blocks from Lancellot and Jordan O’Bryant (Reidsville, NC), to grab a 15-10 lead. Cruising comfortably the rest of the way, O’Bryant would put down the sets final kill for a 25-20 opening win.
In set two, Mount Olive would take advantage of three-straight service aces by Danielle Plante (Fuquay-Varina, NC) to break a seven-all tie into a 10-7 Trojan lead. Another Houser ace and pair of Mount Olive miscues again brought the Lady Falcons back even at 13-13 before a Nicole Karas (Fort Morgan, CO) ace and kill by Talita Rocha (Contagem, BRAZIL) gave Mount Olive their final bit of breathing room to square the match at one set apiece.
O’Bryant would start a third set onslaught for the Lady Falcons with a kill to start a five-point, six-play run. An ace by Lancellot and kill from Amber Wooten (East Bend, NC) put the hosts up 13-5. Lancellot would lead the way down the stretch while Emily Wall (High Point, NC) put down the set’s final kill for a 25-16 win and 2-1 match lead for the Lady Falcons.
The fourth and final set went down to the wire as both teams battled back-and-forth all the way down to a 23-23 score. After both teams completed multi-point rallies to jump ahead and rally back, Anna Vizvary (North Augusta, SC) and Wooten would throw down the final kills of the afternoon for a 3-1 Pfeiffer win.
Wooten would lead all attackers on the day with 16 kills followed by Lancellot’s 10. Wall would assist a match-high 25 times while Cate Glendenning (Holly Springs, NC) popped up 18 digs. Pfeiffer would hit .438 and .300 over the match’s final two sets.
For Mount Olive, Rocha was the only one to reach double-figures with 10 kills while Karas recorded 23 assists. Defensively, libero Nicole Sparks (Songtan, SOUTH KOREA) would pop up a match-high 22 digs.
Pfeiffer will now move on to North Greenville on Wednesday night for a 7:00 p.m. matchup with the Crusaders kicking off a three match week. The Lady Falcons will return home to the Merner Gym next Friday and Saturday to take on Belmont Abbey and Coker.
