MISENHEIMER, N.C. – After cruising 25-7 in the opening set, visiting Belmont Abbey College had to rally 26-24 in set two and hang on in set three during a 3-0 sweep of Pfeiffer University in Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball action on Friday night. The win keeps the Crusaders at a league-best 18-3 overall, 10-1 in league play while the Lady Falcons fall to 4-14, 3-7.
Belmont Abbey rolled comfortably in the opening set using a 12-0 run taking a 7-5 advantage out to 18-5 with Hannah Schellenberg (Jacksonville, FL) serving up that stretch. Lydia Schellenberg (Jacksonville, FL) would put down five of the Crusaders 12 kills to roll by 18.
In the second set, Pfeiffer carried a 21-17 lead into the latter stages taking advantage of a Kelly Lancellot (Naples, FL) ace and pair of errors by Belmont Abbey. After two-straight Angela Jubb (Peachtree City, GA) kills and ace from Julianne Pisano (Erie, PA) the Crusaders would erase the deficit starting over at 21-21. Brianna Jones (Atlanta, GA) would put the Lady Falcons up 23-22 before another Jubb kill and Lydia Schellenberg ace swung the advantage at 24-23. A Pfeiffer attack error and final kill by Hannah Schellenberg would give the Crusaders a 2-0 match lead.
Set three saw the Lady Falcons jump out to an 8-6 lead on a kill from senior Jordan O’Bryant (Reidsville, NC) before Remick Tiller (Palm City, FL) served up six of the next seven points to push the visitors back up three. Three more mini runs of three, four and three by Belmont Abbey would help create the final bit of separation in their match-clinching 25-17 win.
