Women's Cross Country Finish 7th, Men 8th at Conference Meet; Set for NCAA II Regional Meet in Two Weeks

CONCORD, N.C. - Pfeiffer University competed in the Conference Carolinas Conference Championship on Friday afternoon at Frank Liske Park. All 12 schools of the conference were represented as Pfeiffer finished 7th in the womens championship and 8th in the men’s. King College was the women’s championship while Mount Olive won on the men’s side.
The women started the day with Alex Crouch as the top finisher in 28th place with a time of 21:48. Trista Byers finished just five seconds behind in 30th and Janna Featherstone came in on their heels in 31st place with a season-best time of 22:09.
Cori Newton finished in 22:29 and Justine Serje, just cleared from a foot injury that had sidelined her for three weeks, rounded out the top five with a 23:50. Nina Ubabuike and Maia Black finished in 25:53 and 26:54 respectively, and helped secure Pfeiffer’s one point win over Lees-McRae.
“We’ve had to overcome obstacles all year; sometimes big, sometimes small," commented head coach Scott Nolt. "These girls have shown great resiliency and perseverance all year long, to finish just eight points out of 6th place.”
The men's team was led by senior Will Oliver as they have all season. Oliver ran a 28:01 good for 28th place. Following the senior Oliver, Pfeiffer scored five freshmen – Freeze, Garren, Furman, Jarman, and Skidmore. Alex Freeze ran a 29:10 in 44th place. Brandon Garren finished in 29:34 with Henry Furman just five seconds behind. Nathan Jarman was the final scoring runner finishing in 30:01 and in 6th was Jesse Skidmore with a season best time of 30:18. Junior Cody Jones had his best finish of the season finishing the course in 30:21.
In two weeks, both teams will compete at the NCAA Southeast Regional meet at the McAlpine Greenway in Charlotte.
