Bortner and Brophy Lead the Way as Men's Volleyball Dethrones King 3-1

BRISTOL, T.N. - Micah Bortner led all attackers with 18 kills on the day as Pfeiffer University rallied past host King College 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-18) in Conference Carolinas men's volleyball action on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons improve to 2-1 overall and in league play while the Tornado fall to 1-4, 0-3.
Bortner would provide three of the Falcons' final four kills in set two to equalize the match at 1-1 before putting the visitors up for good in set two late at 19-18. Caleb Brophy would start set four with a kill and end it with an ace to provide the Falcons with their 3-1 win.
Bortner would hit .263 with his 18 kills also picking up five digs and an ace to lead the Falcons. Brophy would follow with 15 kills, eight digs and three aces. David Specian contributed with 47 assists in the win while libero Mark Hess once again led the way defensively with nine digs.
For King, Michael Koebel recorded a dozen kills as the only Tornado in double-figures. Ashton Hippenstiel threw up 34 assists while Ned Parker popped up a team-high seven digs.
Pfeiffer will now host the Lance Johnson Memorial Tournament next Friday and Saturday inside the Merner Gym. Coker, Rust and Emmanuel make up the field with exhibition matches against Alderson-Broaddus mixed in.
