February 12, 2013
MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Senior forward Christina Harvey scored a game-high 24 points including her 1,000th career point to lead Pfeiffer University to a 69-52 Conference Carolinas women’s basketball victory over Barton College on Tuesday evening in Merner Gym. The Lady Falcons boost their school-record win-streak to eight games improving to 19-3 overall, 14-3 in league play. The Bulldogs, suffering their worst loss of the season, fall to 15-6, 14-3.
Harvey – the two-time reigning Conference Carolinas Player of the Week – scored 16 of her 24 points in the first half as the Falcons soared out to a 37-24 lead. Pfeiffer (19-3 Overall; 14-3 Conf.) never let up in the second half and cruised to the teams eighth straight win since losing to BC in Wilson on Jan. 21. The two teams are both receiving votes in the current USA TODAY Sports Top-25 Poll and are now tied for second in the league standings.
A pair of made free throws by senior Janae Jackson gave Barton its only lead of 2-0 to start the game. Pfeiffer followed with a 9-3 run to take a lead it would never relinquish. Harvey scored seven consecutive Falcons points in the opening rally. Cox nailed a three-pointer at the 8:33 mark to double up the Lady Bulldogs 26-13. The trey by Cox was the Pfeiffer’s fourth made 3-pointer in the team’s first eight attempts.
Four straight points by Barton senior Shante Neal that included a baseline jumper followed by a hook shot in the paint cut the visitors deficit to 30-19. Harvey answered with an old-fashion three-point play and then two made free throws for her 1,000th point to push the Falcons advantage to 35-19. Junior guard Nyeshea Willie responded with a three-pointer and a pair of free throws to once again inch the Bulldogs to within 11 but Harvey made a late layup as the shot clock expired with 14 seconds remaining in the half to lift Pfeiffer to the 13-point halftime lead.
Harvey and Cox accounted for 30 of the Falcons first 37 points scoring 16 and 14 points, respectively.
Pfeiffer opened the second half with the first seven straight points to extend its cushion to 20-plus points first the first time at 44-24. The Falcons lead grew to 26 points on two occasions and the hosts led by at least 17 points for the final 18 minutes.
Harvey notched her league-leading 10th double-double of the season with game-high totals of 24 points and 14 rebounds. Cox added a double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Jodie Lemons contributed 11 points.
Willie scored a team-high 14 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Junior Cassandra Brown tallied a season-high 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting while Neal matched her with 10 points. Senior Elaine Morgan pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds while totaling game-highs of five steals and five assists.
Pfeiffer shot 44.8% including 33.3% (7-21) from three-point land. The Lady Bulldogs were held to 28.3% overall and a chilly 18.8% (3-16) from long range. The Falcons also won the battle of the boards, 43-38, and points in the paint, 34-18. Barton shot under 30-percent from the field for a fourth time in its last five games.
