Women's Basketball Wraps Up Regular Season with 86-65 Win over Queens; Host Rematch in Tourney Opener on Tuesday

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – On an emotional senior night where Kaela Bellefeuil (Kernersville, NC), Christina Harvey (Locust Grove, VA), Brittany Cox (Winston-Salem, NC) and Kellie Rhoney (Catawba, NC) all suited up for the final regular season home game, Pfeiffer University would shoot 41% from the field, 43% from behind the arc, scoring an 86-65 victory over Queens in Conference Carolinas women’s basketball action on Friday night. The Lady Falcons advance to 22-5 overall, 17-5 in league play while the Royals fall to 13-13, 11-11.

With the way things worked out on Friday, both teams will meet again on Tuesday night in the first round of the 2012-2013 Conference Carolinas women’s basketball tournament. The Lady Falcons will be the #3 seed in the upcoming tourney and will host the sixth-seeded Royals on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.

A 9-0 run early put the Lady Falcons up 10 after a jumper by Rhoney at the 11:49 mark of the first. Cox and Rhoney would get the first half lead up to as much as 19 with 3:56 to play in the half before Queens cut it down to nine, 34-25 at the half.

The Royals would come charging out of the second half gates as a 13-3 run took the visitors from down seven to up three thanks to six points from Dyonna Battle (Rocky Mount, NC). Jodie Lemons (Madison, NC) would stop the run with a three-ball at the 14:34 mark before Pfeiffer took the lead for good just a minute later on a Harvey free throw.

Shonice Pettaway (Walstonburg, NC) and Sarah Myatt (Show Camp, NC) would slice the lead back down to two to get the Royals back in it trailing 54-52 with 7:43 remaining. The Lady Falcons would then close out the regular season on a massive 34-6 run to find themselves up 21 at the final buzzer.

Cox, Rhoney and Lemons would each finish with 19 points on the night while Harvey concluded one behind at 18. Pfeiffer outscored Queens 34-20 in the paint and led 15-5 in assists and 11-4 in steals. Pettaway would lead all scorers for Queens with 21.
