Lady Falcons Advance to Tourney Championship with 78-55 Romp at #2 Barton; Host #5 Mount Olive in Blackout Title Game on Sunday!
March 8, 2013
WILSON, N.C. - The third-seeded Pfeiffer University women's basketball shot 56% from the field and held host #2 Barton to just 34% to roll 78-55 in the 2013 Conference Carolinas tournament semifinal round on Friday night. Coupled with fourth-seeded Mount Olive knocking off top-seeded Limestone 79-66 in overtime, the Lady Falcons will host the 2013 tournament championship game at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
Barton would set the early tone going up six just 4:04 into the contest as a Shante Neal layup gave the Bulldogs the early advantage. A pair of Jodie Lemons free throws and three by Cox got the lead down to one just 46 seconds later while a layup by Cox with 12:10 to go in the half started a massive run that saw Pfeiffer bolt out on a 27-5 run to grab as much as a 15-point lead.
Bridget Rothert would tie the contest at 12-12 before giving the Lady Falcons their first lead of the night the next time down the court on another three-ball. Cox, Lemons and Christina Harvey would all contribute in the stretch while three's from Harvey and Kellie Rhoney extended the lead into double figures.
Barton came out fast in the second half trimming the lead down to six on a three by Nyeshea Willie with 16:44 left before another Rothert three started yet another 11-0 run as five different players accounted for all scoring over that five-minute run.
Pfeiffer's largest lead of the game came after a Rhoney jumper and free throw with 7:42 remaining to put the Lady Falcons up 20 at 59-39. Rhoney would help keep the lead at 20 with free throws, along with Rothert, as a final three from Lemons, pair of baskets by Harvey and Rothert, and final layup with three seconds left again from Lemons, the Lady Falcons had easily punched their ticket to Sunday's championship game.
Harvey scored her team-high 21 points on 10-of-17 shooting pulling down eight rebounds while Cox and Rothert each contributed 17 points. Lemons would add 14 points with seven boards to complete the four players in double-figures. Willie led the Bulldogs with 22 on the night.
Rothert's 17 off the bench would come on 6-of-11 shooting as the freshman stepped up with 25 minutes of action as part of the team battled flu-like conditions during the day on Friday.
Pfeiffer will host a blackout against Mount Olive in Sunday's championship game at 2:00 p.m. The Lady Falcons won both regular season meetings against the Trojans as Sunday's winner will clinch the league's automatic berth into the NCAA national tournament.
