March 26, 2013
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – West Virginia State would bust open a 1-0 contest in game one and strike early in game two sweeping host Pfeiffer University 11-0 and 3-0 in non-conference softball action on Tuesday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets extend their win streak to eight-straight advancing to 14-3 overall while sending the Lady Falcons to 11-17.
In the opener, a Dee Dee Loftis (Charleston, WV) two-out single down the left field line would score Poppy Ramey (Harts, WV) for the early 1-0 lead. Things would stay that way until the sixth when the Yellow Jackets stung the Lady Falcons with 10 more to help end the contest an inning early. WVSU started the frame with four-straight hits, eight in all during the sixth, as Loftis struck again with a two-run double off the fence in center as counting as the big blow. Starter Kelsey Lorraine (Demorest, GA) would nearly cap off the day with a no-hitter until Jessica Jackson (Greensboro, NC) led off the sixth with a single to right.
In game two, Alana Weyant (Alum Bank, PA) put the visitors on the board in the first with a single to left while Loftis again made her presence known with a solo homer to center in the third putting WVSU up 2-0. The Yellow Jackets final run of the day would come in the sixth as Ramey scored on a wild pitch. Pfeiffer would pick up five hits in game two and have the leadoff man on in three of the first six innings, but were unable to get the offense rolling in Tuesday’s sweep. Sara Pelegreen (Hopedale, OH) shut down the Lady Falcons scattering the five hits with five strikeouts.
Pfeiffer will quickly get back to action on Wednesday and jump back inside Conference Carolinas play traveling to Queens for a 4:00 p.m. doubleheader in Charlotte.
