March 26, 2013
MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - Pfeiffer University posted one of their best hitting nights of the season picking up a 3-1 (25-20, 19-25, 25-18, 25-16) victory at Mount Olive in Conference Carolinas men's volleyball action on Tuesday night. The Falcons, who hit .433 as a team led by Caleb Brophy's 20 kills and .471 clip, improve to 14-6 overall, 12-3 in league play. The Trojans suffer their first league-loss at the hands of the Falcons falling to 21-4, 14-1.
Fabio Diniz would set the tone from the very first serve dropping an ace to give Pfeiffer momentum in addition to the first kills of the night by Micah Bortner and Brophy. A Pfeiffer service error would get the Trojans within two at 16-14 until Diniz extended the cushion back out to three with another kill for the Falcons. Brophy would add two more kills late in the set while a final Eric Edelman put down and service error by the Trojans iced set one 25-20.
Tied 15-15 midway through set two, one of Alex Rivero's 14 kills gave Mount Olive a one-point lead as the Trojans would pull away late to even the match at one apiece. Rivero would put down the final kill in set two for a 25-19 victory.
Set three saw the Falcons erase an early 8-5 deficit by racing out on a eight-point run gaining a 14-8 lead. Edelman secured two of those points with kills while David Specian put down a kill and assisted on a block with Edelman twice to provide the burst. Back-to-back aces by Brophy extended the lead to 18-11 while teaming up with Diniz to convert a pair of final kills allowing the Falcons to take a 2-1 match lead.
In the clinching fourth, another Brophy kill and combo block by Specian and Diniz put the Falcons up 10-7 before an Edelman kill and Specian ace pushed it out to 15-9. To help set the tone for a possible rematch in the Conference Carolinas tournament championship, final kills from Diniz and Brophy clinched the match with a 25-16 cruising in set four.
Brophy's match-high 20 kills was helped out by Specian's 45 assists. Pfeiffer would out-block Mount Olive 14 to 4.5 in the four-set win and hold the Trojans to hitting just .188 on the night.
Pfeiffer will stay on the road this Friday and Saturday traveling to Indiana to battle IPFW and Ball State. Live stats/video will be available through http://www.gofalconsports.com.
