Men's Volleyball Avoids Sweep; Falls 3-1 at IPFW Kicking Off Indiana Road Trip

FORT WAYNE, I.N. - Pfeiffer University fought off a sweep attempt but eventually fell 3-1 (25-21, 25-16, 19-25, 25-22) at IPFW in division one men's volleyball action on Friday night. The Mastodons improve to 11-9 overall with the victory while the Falcons fall to 14-7.

A pair of early kills by Caleb Brophy would help Pfeiffer out to a 12-10 lead in the opening set for Kyle Mariano kept the advantage at two with a kill just two points later. A Mariano ace and Brophy kill on back-to-back plays got the lead to 17-14 before Brophy broke a 17-17 moments later on another put down. The final swing for IPFW saw three kills come from Jeremy Swartz in a four-plan span to turn the tide resulting in a 25-21 comeback win for the Mastodons.

Sonny Hirini would get an early kill in set two before IPFW got a pair of kills from Andy Sellan racing out to a 13-8 lead. Keegan Robbins would chip in with a pair of late kills while Bryan Saunders put down the set's final kill for a quick 26-16 win.

Using several Mastodon errors, Pfeiffer bolted out to a 17-12 lead as Eric Edelman sandwiched an ace in between of two more Mariano kills for an 18-13 advantage. Brophy would pick up three of the Falcons' final four kills while Micah Bortner's put down kept Pfeiffer alive with a 25-19 set three win.

In set four, Mariano tied things up with a kill at 15-15 while an Eddie Rivera kill, Ramon Burgos ace and attack error by Pfeiffer gave IPFW their final bit of breathing room needed with a three-point, 18-15 lead. The Falcons would get to within one at 20-18 on an IPFW miscue and 22-21 on Mariano's final kill of the night but a Kevin Villela kill and ace on match point sealed the 3-1 win.

Sellan would lead IPFW with 16 kills on the night as the hosts hit .417 as a team in the win. Brophy would pace the Falcons with 14 kills while David Specian had 33 assists.
