April 2, 2013
MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Newberry College completed seven-straight innings of scoring at-least one run with two in the top of the seventh to comeback for a 10-9 win over Pfeiffer University in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday night. The Wolves improve to 22-17 overall while the Falcons drop their fourth-straight falling to 13-24.
Newberry struck first in the opening frame using a two-walk by Ryan Cranmer to keep the inning alive for an eventual RBI single off the bat of Eric Barbeiri. To start the second, Brandan Sheridan and JoJo Bradley would trade leadoff doubles to quickly push the lead to 2-0.
Pfeiffer got on the board in their half of the second as back-to-back leadoff walks by Cole McGraw and Matt Wade paid off as Johnny Brown, Jr. delivered a run-scoring single down the left-field line to score McGraw. Kevin Price would tie the contest at two three batters later on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch to bring in Wade for a 2-2 game. Jacob Yates would then follow with a free pass to first to give the Falcons a 3-2 lead. After a Newberry pitching change, Jon Gray slapped a two-run single to cap off the five-run frame.
The Wolves would come right back with two more in the third as a string of four-straight hits led to a 5-4 game. Cranmer would drive in Wesley Camp with a double to left-center while Eric Barbieri singled in Cranmer with a base knock to center. Pfeiffer starter Ethan Greene would keep a one-run lead for the Falcons getting Sheridan to ground into a 5-3 inning-ending double play.
Newberry tied things up in the fourth as Bradley started the inning with a double to left-center, later scoring on a two-out single to left by Anthony Siler. Gray would continue his strong 2013 season providing the second-straight double coupled with Yates to give Pfeiffer a 6-5 lead back. Pfeiffer would add two more on a throwing error and wild pitch before Brown, Jr. kncoked in Wade with a base hit to left.
After Newberry added a run in the fifth on a groundout by Bradley, a Cranmer groundout and wild pitch later in the sixth would bring the Wolves back to within one at 9-8. The Wolves would then grab the lead again in the top of the seventh for the first time since the first frame using a pinch-hit groundout by Zach Morgan and a go-ahead sacrifice fly by Nolan Schrenker.
Pfeiffer will get back into Conference Carolinas play starting Friday night in the opener of a three-game series at Barton. Live stats will be available through http://www.gofalconsports.com.
