Lady Falcon Softball Knocks Off Lenoir-Rhyne for First Time since 2001 with 1-0 Game Two Walkoff

Box Score

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – A walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh in game two by Ashlee Ellen (Jacksonville, FL) helped host Pfeiffer University split a non-conference softball doubleheader with Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday afternoon. The Bears, who were ranked #25 in the nation last week, picked up a 2-0 win in the opener while Ellen’s hit gave the Lady Falcons a 1-0 win in the nightcap. Lenoir-Rhyne moves to 24-11 overall on the year while Pfeiffer slides to 14-22.

In game one, a Lauren Elder (Taylorsville, NC) RBI single in the third plated the Bears’ first run, unearned, while a Brittany Coursen (Virginia Beach, VA) single in the fourth gave Lenoir-Rhyne their insurance run. The Lady Falcons would have another quality scoring chance in the bottom of the seventh with two on and one out, but Bears starter Maryann Hoskins (Havelock, NC) finished off her complete game shutout with nine strikeouts.

Scoreless heading to the bottom of the seventh in game two, Jaclyn Boever (Bostic, NC) started the frame with a single down the left field line while Sadie Saine (Crouse, NC) drew a walk two batters later to put runners at first and second with one out. After a wild pitch moved Saine and Hannah Jackson (Greensboro, NC) to second and third, Ellen laced her base hit up the middle just past the out-stretched glove of Chelsey Long (Nakina, NC) at short for the walk-off win.

Sam Jarmusch (Colfax, NC) would pick up the win in game two for the Lady Falcons tossing all seven innings allowing just four hits with six strikeouts. Tyresha Ellis (Jefferson, SC) recorded two hits in her two at-bats to go along with an intentional walk in the sixth.

The game two victory for Pfeiffer snapped a 30-game winning streak for the Bears over the Lady Falcons. Wednesday’s win marked the first time since the 2001 season that Pfeiffer defeated Lenoir-Rhyne on the softball diamond.

Pfeiffer gets back to action on Friday starting a four-game road trip at Johnson C. Smith in Charlotte. First pitch to start the weekend doubleheader will begin at 4:00 p.m.
