Softball Drops Tourney Opener to Top-Seeded King 2-1; Elimination Game Suspended with Limestone in 6th
April 19, 2013
BURLINGTON, N.C. - The Pfeiffer University softball team began the 2013 Conference Carolinas tournament with a 2-1 heartbreaking loss to top-seeded King in the opening round before having their elimination game with Limestone suspended tied at 3-3 in the top of the sixth. The Lady Falcons will resume their contest with the Saints at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Updates of all conference tournament action can be found up to the minute via Twitter (@PfeifferSports) and on Facebook.
GAME ONE: (1) King 2, (8) Pfeiffer 1
Tied at 1-1 in entering the sixth, King would take advantage of a pair of Pfeiffer errors to score their eventual game-winning and unearned run in the sixth. Earlier, the Tornado would take a 1-0 lead in the first until Pfeiffer immediately responded a half-inning later in the second. Sam Jarmusch led off with a single to left and later scored on a two-out single to center by Tyresha Ellis. The Lady Falcons would out-hit the Tornado 6-3, but couldn't push across the tying or go-ahead run. Lindsey Russell suffered the tough-luck loss allowing one earned run on just three hits with four strikeouts.
GAME TWO: (8) Pfeiffer 3, (3) Limestone 3 (suspended in the 6th)
Expected showers and storms finally invaded Burlington just as Emily Workman led off the top of the sixth with a bunt single forcing a Limestone pitching change. The game will resume on Saturday beginning at 2:00 p.m. to allow time for the field to dry and pre-game prep.
Pfeiffer would score single runs in each of the first three innings on an Ashlee Ellen sacrifice fly, Sadie Saine RBI single in the second and Workman base knock in the third.
Should the Lady Falcons end Limestone's season, they would take on the loser of the winner's bracket game between Coker and King at 6:00 p.m. If Pfeiffer can advance to face the loser of Coker and King then defeat one of them, a third contest would be in store beginning at 8:00 p.m.
