Softball Ends Limestone's Season with 8-5, 14-Inning Win Before King Eliminates Lady Falcons with 2-0 Shutout

Box Score

BURLINGTON, N.C. - The Pfeiffer University had a wild finish to the 2013 softball season ending Limestone's season with a crazy 8-5, 14-inning win Saturday afternoon before being eliminated by top-seeded King 2-0 in the nightcap. The Lady Falcons end the year at 21-28 concluding the Conference Carolinas tournament in fifth being the fourth team eliminated.

To begin the day, Pfeiffer and Limestone had to resume Friday night's contest that was suspended due to rain in the top of the sixth tied at 3-3. The Lady Falcons would push the go-ahead run across in the sixth on a Sadie Saine single to center before Limestone stayed alive in regulation scored the tying run on a wild pitch on their last out.

In extras, Pfeiffer would grab a 5-4 lead on an Ashlee Ellen RBI single to score Khristin Isley before Limestone squared the contest on a bases-loaded hit by pitch in the bottom of the 10th. Both teams would remain deadlocked at 5-5 until the 14th. Tyresha Ellis came up with the big hit delivering a two-out, two-run double for a 7-5 lead before Lindsey Russell added an infield single to score Sam Jarmusch with the eighth and final run.

Jarmusch would not only score the insurance run in the 14th but would be the workhorse inside the circle tossing all 14 innings, albeit five were thrown on Friday night, while allowing just four earned runs on seven strikeouts to finish her year at 11-7. Saine would lead the Lady Falcons offensively going 4-for-7 in the elimination game that took just over four hours to complete with two RBI and a run scored.

After King fell to Coker in 12 innings after the Lady Falcons 14-inning win, both teams ironically squared off in another elimination game that took just 76 minutes to decide. Everything was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth until Hannah Smith lined a two-out, two-run single to center with the bases loaded accounting for the only pair of runs in the nightcap. Both teams could only manage just four hits apiece after the longer encounters during the day while Russell took the tough loss inside the circle tossing six frames allowing the two runs with six strikeouts in the loss. Jarmusch ended up collecting two of the Lady Falcons four hits against King.
