Women's Volleyball Drops Pair to Open 2013 Campaign

FT. LAUDERDALE, FL – The Pfeiffer University women’s volleyball team (0-2) dropped a pair of matches to kick off its 2013 season. Pfeiffer competed in the Nova Southeastern Tournament, hosted by Nova Southeastern University.

In the opening match, the Lady Falcons fell to Lynn University by scores of 11-25, 19-25, and 16-25. Pfeiffer’s offense was led by Brianna Jones who posted seven kills, while Emily Wall dished out a team-high 11 assists. Kelly Lancellot and Milana Mervosh added seven and six kills respectively. The Lady Falcons couldn’t overcome 20 hitting errors in the match. Lynn hit .297 as a team and had 12 blocks to go along with 11 service aces.

In the afternoon’s second contest, Pfeiffer took on Sioux Falls and dropped the first two matches 18-25 and 14-25. The Lady Falcons refused to go down without a fight, grabbing a third set victory 25-21. However, Sioux Falls was too strong in the fourth set, winning 25-13. Shelby Younger paced Pfeiffer with eight kills, while Lancellot and Mervosh each added seven kills. Setter Meghan Davis dished out 17 assists and Merovsh had a team-high 11 digs. Nicole Nitu was solid, serving four aces in the match.

"The effort was definately there today," said Head Coach Paul Lawson. "We did some things well and have some things to work on. I think we started getting better as the day went on and we will continue to improve as the girls continue to play together."

Lawson was coaching his first career match as the Falcons' head coach.

Pfeiffer returns to action tomorrow as they compete in their final two matches in Ft. Lauderdale. The Lady Falcons take on Rollins at 11:30 a.m. and then play the host Sharks of Nova Southeastern at 4:30 p.m.
