Men's Soccer Shuts Out Belmont Abbey On Homecoming

Box Score

MISENHEIMER, NC – The Pfeiffer University men’s soccer team (3-4-1, 1-2 Conference Carolinas) defeated Belmont Abbey (2-5, 0-3) 2-0 on a sunny afternoon at NE Lefko Field. Seth Dey dished out two assists in the victory and Pfeiffer got a goal each from Simon Leslie and Dammy Balogun to secure the win in front of its home crowd on homecoming weekend.

Balogun got the scoring started in the 25th minute when Dey’s throw in found him 10 yards outside of the box. Balogun’s header got past Crusaders goalkeeper Kyle Searles for his first goal of the season. The half would end with the Falcons holding a 1-0 advantage. Belmont held a slight 7-6 advantage in shots and 2-1 lead in corners.

Leslie’s goal in the 66th minute put the game away for the hosts. Dey sent a perfect ball to Leslie on the left wing and the senior did the rest, firing a shot past Searles in the bottom right corner of the goal. The Crusaders tried to rally, but the Falcons defense held strong. With less than 10 minutes remaining, Aldo Ramirez fired a shot from 30 yards out that narrowly missed giving Pfeiffer a three-goal advantage as it clanged off the crossbar.

First-year Head Coach Bob Reasso was pleased with the result.

“I thought it was a very competitive game,” said Reasso. “Belmont Abbey is a good team and they are well coached. Our guys competed really hard today and scored some timely goals. It’s nice to be home and get a win on homecoming.”

Prior to today, the Falcons played six of its first seven games away from Misenheimer.

For the contest, Belmont Abbey held a slim 16-14 advantage in shots and a 4-2 margin in corners. Dulac made seven saves to record his third shutout on the season. Searles made three saves in the losing effort.

The Falcons return to action on Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m. on NE Lefko Field when they take on Lees-McRae.
