Women's Volleyball Downed by Barton

WILSON, N.C. – Brianna Jones and Anna Vizvary recorded double-digit kills for the second straight match, but the Pfeiffer University volleyball team (4-12, 2-4 Conference Carolinas) dropped its match at Barton (5-7, 4-2) in straight sets. Melissa Cochran posted a game-high 14 kills for the Bulldogs, who improve to 4-2 at home.
Barton jumped out to early leads of 4-0 and 8-3 in the opening set, but Pfeiffer battled back. Back-to-back kills from Jones, and a kill and a block by Emily Wall, cut the deficit to 17-16. However, Kaitlyn Micol and Cochran would account for seven of Barton’s final eight points to give the hosts a 25-22 opening stanza victory.
Pfeiffer had nine attack errors and hit -.031 in the second set, as Barton ran away with a 25-17 win.
The Lady Falcons would rebound in the third and final set, hitting .234 with a match-high 15 kills. Pfeiffer scored four straight points to take an early 5-2 led, culminating with a kill from Shelby Younger. Barton would roar back and score five straight to retake command. The rest of the match was nip-and-tuck as the teams were tied on nine separate occasions, with the last coming at 17 all on a kill by Jones. Barton would finally pull away; scoring eight of the matches last 11 points to grab the 25-20 win.
For the match, the Lady Falcons hit .161 and had 36 kills. Conversely, the Bulldogs hit .257 with 39 kills. Each team finished with nine total blocks, but Barton held the serving advantage, doubling up the Lady Falcons in aces, 8-4.
Wall had her second straight double-double as she finished with 28 assists and a game-high 17 digs. Haley Denny added 16 digs and Kelly Lancellot finished with three blocks and a .250 hitting percentage.
Last night, Pfeiffer defeated Mount Olive, 3-2 as Jones set a career-high with 16 kills and Vizvary added 13 kills of her own.
The Lady Falcons won’t have to wait long to avenge the loss, as the two teams meet on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in Misenheimer.
