Women's Soccer Advances to Conference Carolinas Championship; Face Belmont Abbey in Title Game For Third Time in Four Years

Box Score

For the second consecutive season, the Pfeiffer women’s soccer team (13-6) has advanced to the Conference Carolinas Championship match. Pfeiffer cruised through King on Thursday afternoon, defeating the Tornado 2-0. The win, coupled with Belmont Abbey defeating Barton, sets the stage for a rematch of last year’s championship where the Crusaders came away with a 1-0 victory.

In 2010, Pfeiffer defeated Belmont Abbey in the championship, making this the third time in four years that the two will meet with a NCAA berth on the line.

Pfeiffer dominated the stat sheet and the game, holding a 23-3 lead and shots and an 8-1 lead in corner kicks.

Freshman Kate Halligan earned the win in goal to improve to 5-5-0 on the season. Halligan made one save while her counterpart, Nicole Dagher, suffered the loss while making 11 saves.

Pfeiffer dominated the first half of play, holding a 12-1 advantage in shots and a 7-0 lead in corner kicks. Miracle Campbell put the Falcons up in the 32nd minute, after just being subbed into the contest. Kayla Rodriguez lofted a corner kick into the box and a scrum for possession ensued. Campbell corralled the loose ball and fired it into the back of the net for the sixth goal of her freshman season.

The pressure continued into the second half as Brae Buster fired back-to-back shots in the first 90 seconds, with the second attempt nearly putting the Falcons up two. In the 52nd minute, Aaliyah Jackson broke through the defense and chipped a shot past the keeper that hit off the post. Hannah Hill was in the right spot at the right time and put the rebound home.

King was unable to sustain any offensive attack, firing only three shots for the afternoon, all coming off the right foot of Rachel Thorpe.

The Falcons now advance to Saturday’s championship game and travel to Belmont Abbey, who have made the championship nine years in a row. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
