Women's Basketball Falls in Double Overtime

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Pfeiffer women's basketball team (0-3) fell in double overtime at Mars Hill (1-1) on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 91-85. Carter Williams played all 50 minutes and scored a game-high 27 points and connected on all 12 of her free throw attempts. Three players scored over 20 points for the Lions, led by 24 from Ansley Ricker.
The Falcons couldn't hold a 66-60 lead with under two minutes remaining in the second half. Ricker hit two three pointers in the final 26 seconds, including one with three seconds remaining to send the game into the first overtime period.
Amy Steller hit a three to start the scoring in the first overtime period, but the Lions responded with a 5-0 run to reclaim the lead. With the Falcons trailing by one with 45 seconds left, Steller hit another clutch three giving Pfeiffer the two point advantage. Ariana Tillman committed a foul with 31 seconds left and Genice Lane calmly sank both free throws, tying the game for the 12th time. Pfeiffer had the last chance to score, but couldn't get a shot off as the game went to a second overtime.
The team's traded baskets to start the second OT but Mars Hill extended the lead to 84-78 with a 6-0 spurt. Williams converted two free throws to cut the lead to 88-85 with 19 seconds remaining, but the Lions converted from the charity stripe down the stretch to come away with the win.
Vivian Doerr pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds and added nine points, while Lauren White continued to be a defensive force, blocking seven shots in 28 minutes of action. Steller and Carlisha Holivay scored 12 points and Tillman had eight points, six rebounds and six assists.
Pfeiffer shot 44 percent from the field for the game and hit 41 percent of their attempts from long range.
Mars Hill had a 46-26 advantage in free throws attempted and converted on 80 percent of their free throws.
The Falcons return to action on Tuesday night when they host Johnson C Smith at 7:30 p.m.
