Baseball Earns Opening Day Victory Over Mars Hill; Greene Picks Up the Win
February 1, 2014
FLORENCE, SC - Despite the start of their season being delayed nearly five hours, the Pfeiffer baseball team (1-0) defeated Mars Hill 9-4 in seven innings (0-2). First pitch was delayed until 10:10 p.m. and the game was called after the seventh just before 1 a.m. due to dense fog. Sophomore Ethan Greene earned the win, going six strong innings, while reigning All-Conference outfielder Jon Gray went 2-for-5 with three RBI's out of the leadoff spot.
The lions jumped out to a 3-0 lead by scoring one in the second and two in the third. In the bottom of the third, Dylan Goodman and Kevin Price drew back-to-back walks and Goodman advanced to third on a wild pitch. Second basemen Jon Elwood doubled to right center to score both runners and pull Pfeiffer within one.
Mars Hill scored another run of Green in the fifth on a double steal, and led 4-2.
Pfeiffer would score seven straight runs, thanks in large part to a five run sixth inning. Pfeiffer would benefit from two Mars Hill errors in the inning and Gray's triple to left center knocked relief pitcher Kevin Searcy from the game. Tyler Summers would score Gray with an extra base hit of his own as the Falcons had pounded out six hits in the inning.
The bottom of the lineup produced for Pfeiffer with the eighth and ninth hitters Goodman and Price going 2-for-5 with five runs and three walks. Summers went 1-for-2 with 2 runs and two walks along with his RBI in the sixth.
Pfeiffer's batters struck out 14 times in the seven inning contest.
Pfeiffer returns Sunday with a double header at 3 and 6 p.m. In the early contest, the Falcons face a familiar foe in Limestone. The night cap features Pfeiffer and the tournament hosts, Francis Marion. Follow the action here.
