Softball Drops Non-Conference Matchup to Wingate

COLUMBUS, G.A. - Despite holding their opponent hitless in the first two innings, the Pfeiffer University softball team fell to undefeated Wingate University 9-0 in non-conference play Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Falcons to 1-2 on the season and with the win Wingate extends their win streak to five, improving to 5-0. Wingate's Taylor Bates is credited with the win and improves to 2-0 while Pfeiffer's Jessica Griffin picks up the loss and falls to 0-1.
Pfeiffer's defense made a statement early on, holding Wingate scoreless through the first two innings, getting a monster strikeout from Griffin in the top of the second inning. Griffin finished the game with three strikeouts in five innings pitched, and allowed five earned runs while facing 27 batters. Offensively the Falcons had four players contribute a hit apiece throughout the course of the matchup and left six runners on base.
Wingate broke the scoring open in the top of the third as they put up three runs on three hits. Griffin stepped up in fine fashion in inning number four striking out her second batter of the afternoon. The Falcons were able to hold Wingate scoreless in the fourth and fifth frames with Griffin claiming her third and final victim in the top of the fifth. Wingate put up six runs on six hits in the final inning of play, leaving three runners on base.
Pfeiffer returns to action tomorrow when they take on Lincoln Memorial at 10:30 a.m. The Falcons then play their final matchup of the Cougar Classic when they face conference rival King at 12:00 p.m.
