Men's Volleyball Surrenders Non-Conference Bout to Lindenwood

Box Score

MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The final score was in no way indicative of the sheer battle that was fought in Merner Gym this afternoon, with the Pfeiffer men's volleyball team eventually surrendering to visiting Lindenwood, 3-1.  The loss drops the Falcons to 5-7 on the season and Lindenwood improves to 11-4 with the victory.

Facing a Lindenwood team that was competing in their third match in as many days, Pfeiffer Head Coach Paul Lawson decided a shake up of the normal lineup was in order.  Games one and two of the match were as close as they could get, with Lindenwood eventually taking both, 25-23.  Game one was nearly dominated by the Falcons who jumped out to a 9-5 lead following a kill by sophomore Wyatt Hamilton.  Despite 12 ties in the score during game one, when the game wasn't tied, Pfeiffer was in control.  Regardless of the effort, the Falcons eventually succumbed to Lindenwood in game one.  Game two was a completely different story altogether with Lindenwood leading much of that frame, and eventually beating off a Pfeiffer comeback to take that game as well.

The third stanza was all Pfeiffer, and behind a solid defensive effort from Brewer and junior David Specian, the Falcons eventually claimed game three 25-20.  Specian and Brewer led the Falcons with seven digs apiece and Specian finished the match with 32 assists.  Game four belonged to Lindenwood 25-19, as Pfeiffer couldn't seem to find an answer for Lindenwood's Colin Hackworth who led all players with 20 kills for the match.

Pfeiffer was led offensively by the sophomore duo of Fabio Diniz and Sonny Hirini, each finished with eight kills for the match.  The match marked the first time this season that Hirini has been held to less than 10 kills in a single contest.  He leads the Falcons in kills with 172 for the season.  Freshman Evan Blair made his presence known in the match as well, chipping in seven kills and tying the effort by his teammate Michael Brewer.  Brewer's performance today brings him within five kills of 100 for the season.

The Falcons won the defensive competition grabbing 28 digs to Lindenwood's 24, and 11 team blocks to the visitors' 10.  Lindenwood also had 24 serving errors on the contest, while Pfeiffer kept their errors to 15.

With the win Lindenwood claims the season series with the Falcons 2-0.  The two squads last met on February 1st, when the Lions defeated Pfeiffer 3-1.

Pfeiffer has a few days to collect themselves before they return to action on February 26th against conference foe King.  Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in Merner Gym.
