Men's Volleyball Defeats King in a Record Breaking Night
February 26, 2014
MISENHEIMER, NC - Sophomore Wyatt Hamilton finished with a career-high 26 kills as the Pfeiffer men's volleyball team (6-7, 4-2 CC) defeated King (7-8, 3-4) by a final score of 3-1 in a hard fought contest inside Merner Gymnasium. Hamilton's previous season high was 14 kills against Quincy on Jan. 31 but the outside hitter equaled that total after the first two sets on Wednesday night. Hamilton would have broken Caleb Brophy's record of the most kills in a three set match had the Falcons won in three, instead he settled for a personal best.
Hamilton and teammate Sonny Hirini each finished with a double-double. Hirini had 13 kills and 11 digs while Hamilton added 11 digs as well. Michael Brewer finished with 18 kills on the night and setter Harrison Lutz dished out an incredible 60 assists.
King was led by 13 kills from Nick Serowski and 11 kills from Eddie Moushikhian.
Pfeiffer crushed a school record of most kills in a four set match. The previous high of 62 against Fontebonne on March 19, 2010 was surpassed by tonight's 73 kill total. Pfeiffer also topped the school record for most assists in a game, notching 73. The Falcons came one dig shy of breaking the record of 56 digs in a four set match.
Pfeiffer took the first and second sets and looked primed to beat King in three. However, the Tornados finished off Pfeiffer in dramatic fashion in the third set by a score of 27-25.
The fourth set was equally as exciting, taking 64 points to settle the contest. Pfeiffer came out on the winning end with a 33-31 decision as Hamilton ended the game with his 26th kill.
Pfeiffer hit .324 as a team compared to a .207 hitting percentage from King. Each team finished with seven total blocks. Pfeiffer dominated defensively, recording a 55-31 advantage in digs.
The Falcons are back in action on Friday night as they host Belmont Abbey at 7 p.m.
