Softball Opens Conference Play at North Greenville; Drop First Two League Games in Doubleheader

Game One Box Score              Game Two Box Score

TIGERVILLE, S.C. - The Pfeiffer University softball team opened Conference Carolinas play at North Greenville Saturday afternoon, dropping both games of a doubleheader to the home team.  Game one of the series ended 5-0 in North Greenville's favor, with Pfeiffer falling in game two by a score of 6-3.  The matchup drops Pfeiffer's overall record to 6-10 and 0-2 in conference play, with North Greenville improving to 13-6 overall and 4-0 in the conference.

Game one was extremely tight through the first three frames, with neither team able to get on the board.  North Greenville broke open the scoring in the bottom of the fourth however, putting up four runs on four hits.  The Crusaders picked up their fifth and final run of the game in the very next inning, and closed out that frame with only one hit.

Pfeiffer had five hits in game one and was led offensively by senior Hannah Jackson whose two-hit outing was a game high.  Redshirt-sophomore Sam Jarmusch picked up two strikeouts one the mound for the Falcons, recording the loss and falling to 2-4 on the season.  Rachel Glazebrook picked up the win for the Crusaders and improved to 6-3 overall.

Game two played out much differently than the first contest, with the Falcons striking first.  Jackson scored in the top of the first frame off a single by junior Lindsey Russell, and Pfeiffer left two on base to end the inning.  North Greenville would answer with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first, and three more tallies in the bottom of the third.  The Falcons refused to back down however and battled back with a two run showing in the top of the fifth to pull within three of the Crusaders.  A strong defensive effort by the home team in the final two frames ended the contest at 6-3.

The Falcons put up eight hits in the second game, and were led by freshman Rachel Crowder and junior Emily Workman who had half of those hits with two apiece.  Freshman hurler Sydney Poole picked up the loss for the Falcons and falls to 2-4 on the season.  Sarah Armstrong was credited with the win for North Greenville and improves to 4-1 overall.

Pfeiffer returns to action tomorrow when they welcome non-conference foe Tusculum to Misenheimer for a doubleheader.  The Falcons last faced Tusculum on February 8th in Columbus, GA and were victorious in that contest, 2-0.  The first pitch of game one is set for 1:00 p.m.
