March 19, 2014
BRISTOL, T.N. - The Pfeiffer men's volleyball team picked up a crucial conference win on the road Wednesday evening, defeating King University 3-1 behind stellar performances throughout the lineup as well as on both sides of the ball. With the win the Falcons improve to 9-11 overall and 6-4 in Conference Carolinas play while King falls to 8-15 overall and 3-7 in conference competition with the loss. Juniors Michael Brewer and David Specian recorded double-doubles for the Falcons, with Brewer picking up 14 kills and ten digs, and Specian adding 46 assists and ten digs. Brewer's kills led all players while Specian had a game-high with his assist performance.
Pfeiffer claimed game one 25-16 due in large part to Specian's stoic serve, serving six of the Falcons' points in the first frame. The visitors stumbled a bit in game two, surrendering to the Tornado 22-25 in the second stanza. Games three and four were all Pfeiffer, picking up victories 25-17 and 25-15 respectively. The Falcons got a significant contribution from senior Buck Boswell playing in only his second match this season and recording a season-high seven kills in the contest and adding four digs to Pfeiffer's 43.
Also in double-figure kills for the Falcons was sophomore Fabio Diniz who knocked down ten balls for the visiting team. On the defensive side of the ball, Pfeiffer boasted three players in double-figure digs getting ten from Brewer and Specian and 12 from sophomore Kevin Ecklund. Pfeiffer out-hit their opponents .324 to .107, had 11 more digs, and had a whopping 12 blocks which was enough for double King's total on the match. Diniz was in on more than half of those blocks, picking up credit for seven assisted stuffs and hitting an eye-popping .556 offensively.
Pfeiffer returns to action on March 25th when they travel to South Carolina for a Conference Carolinas showdown with league-leading Erskine. The last time these two met was on March 10th when the Falcons fell to Erskine 3-1 in Merner Gym. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m.
