WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Pfeiffer softball team (12-17) split its double header with Winston-Salem St. (15-10) on a warm Tuesday afternoon at Salem College Field. The Rams took the opener 4-2 but the Falcons rebounded in game two thanks to a superb effort from pitcher Sydney Poole. Sophomore third basemen Celia Dew went 6-for-6 with two runs and five RBI’s in the two games.
Winston-Salem St. jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings in the first game and never looked back. However, Dew did all she could to keep the Falcons close. In her first at bat of the afternoon, Dew laced a double to left center. In the top of the fifth, Dew led off the inning with a solo homerun which cut the deficit to 4-1. In her last at bat of the game, Dew came up with two outs and nobody on base and crushed her second homer of the afternoon, to finish the game 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI’s. Dew accounted for all the runs and had nearly half of the team’s seven hits in the game.
Samantha Jarmusch took the loss on the mound, firing five innings and allowing three earned runs. Jarmusch struck out seven hitters, her second highest total of the season. Kaitlin Macmillan came and retired all three batters that she faced in the bottom of the sixth.
Poole matched Dew’s dominant performance with a masterpiece on the mound in the night cap. Poole threw a complete game shutout for the third time this season. The freshman allowed only three hits and one walk, while striking out eight batters to lower her ERA to 2.84.
The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth where the Falcons broke through for two runs on two hits. Emily Workman singled to left field with one out and Hannah Jackson reached on an error. After a fielder’s choice, Dew delivered again. She stroked a two-RBI base hit to center field that scored Sadie Saine and Jackson.
In the seventh, Jessica Jackson added an RBI single to push the lead to three and Poole did the rest.
The Falcons return to action on Thursday when they host Johnson C. Smith at Jack Ingram Field. The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m.
