MISENHEIMER, NC – On a warm and sunny afternoon, the Pfeiffer softball team (14-17) dominated Johnson C Smith (9-15) and swept the Golden Bulls by a combined score of 17-0 in their doubleheader. In the opener, Celia Dew went 3-for-3 to extend an impressive hit streak where she recorded hits in nine consecutive at bats. In the second game, Sydney Poole tossed six shutout innings and allowed only one hit as the freshman extended her consecutive scoreless innings streak to 15.
Against Winston-Salem St. on Tuesday, Dew went 6-for-6 with four RBI and two runs scored. She continued her hot streak in the first game with a third straight 3-for-3 performance. Dew finished the game with two runs and two RBI’s as Pfeiffer cruised to a 9-0 victory in five innings.
Kaitlin Macmillian improved to 2-1 on the season with five shutout innings. Macmillan allowed four hits and struck out five batters.
Poole dominated the second game, retiring the first 11 batters she faced. Johnson C Smith’s Jocelyn Hernandez’s weakly hit ground ball found the hole between third base and shortstop for the team’s only hit of the afternoon. Poole didn’t allow another base runner and struck out 10 batters, while not allowing a runner past first base all game.
Dew’s consecutive hit streak ended at nine as her first at bat of the second game resulted in an error by the Golden Bulls’ shortstop. However, Dew was credited with an RBI on the play as Pfeiffer took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.
Pfeiffer added two more in their next at bat as Jessica Jackson had an RBI single to left center and Dew added another RBI with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Johnson C Smith went to the bullpen to start the top of the fourth but couldn’t slow Pfeiffer’s offense. Ally Mills started the inning with a walk and later scored on an error by the third basemen. Lindsay Russell followed with an RBI single to center field as Pfeiffer’s lead grew to 5-0.
Hannah Jackson singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth and then stole second base. After a ground out, Jessica Jackson crushed a triple over the center fielders head. The younger Jackson would score on Russell’s double down the left field line as Pfeiffer was one run away from ending the contest. Corinne Auger sent the Golden Bulls home with a double to center field that scored Russell and ended the game.
Russell finished with a 3-for-3 game and scored twice while knocking in two more. Jessica Jackson went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI’s.
Poole improved to 6-7 on the mound.
Pfeiffer returns to action this Sunday afternoon as they makeup last weekend’s doubleheader with Barton. The game was rained out and first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
