Men's Volleyball Clinches No. 2 Seed in Conference Tournament With 3-0 Win at Barton
April 5, 2014
WILSON, N.C. – The Pfeiffer men’s volleyball team (13-11, 10-4 CC) wrapped up the No. 2 seed in the Conference Carolinas tournament with a convincing 3-0 victory at Barton (11-16, 7-7) to conclude the regular season. With the win, Pfeiffer now has a bye to the semifinals of the conference tournament and will host the winner of No. 3 Mount Olive and No. 6 Lees-McRae at Merner Gym on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Falcons have won the tournament each of the past two seasons and enter post-season play on fire, winning five straight games and not losing a set in three consecutive games.
Wyatt Hamilton led the offensive attack for Pfeiffer with 10 of his team’s 30 kills on the night. Pfeiffer hit .197 for the game as compared to Barton’s .075 percentage.
Chad Stanback Jr. led all players with 13 kills and a .375 hitting percentage but it wasn’t enough for the Bulldogs. Zach McCalla had a rough game for the hosts, posting 10 attack errors and a -.167 hitting percentage.
Pfeiffer won the three games by scores of 25-20, 25-19 and 25-23 to garner the second seed in the conference standings. Barton helped Pfeiffer earlier in the week as the Bulldogs upset Mount Olive who would have clinched the second seed with a win. All the Falcons had to do tonight was win and they would leap the Trojans thanks to holding the tiebreaker over Mount Olive.
The stage is now set for the three-peat for the Falcons. The tournament’s number one seed is the Erskine Flying Fleet, who also earns a bye to the semifinals. The Flying Fleet will host the winner of Barton at Limestone in Due West, SC on Saturday. If the top two seeds advance, the championship will be held at Erskine on Wednesday, April 16 at 7 p.m. Pfeiffer can still host the championship game for the third straight year with a win on Saturday, coupled with a loss by Erskine.
Sonny Hirini ends the regular season as Pfeiffer’s kill leader, finishing the year with 284 kills. Fabio Diniz leads the team, and the conference, with a .401 hitting percentage and David Specian is Pfeiffer’s team leader with 720 assists. Defensively, Kevin Ecklund led the way with 168 digs and Diniz had 89 total blocks.
