Softball Drops Non-Conference Doubleheader at UNC Pembroke

Game 1 Box   Game 2 Box

PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Pfeiffer softball team (15-19-1) dropped both contests of its doubleheader at UNC Pembroke (21-21) dropping the first contest 4-1 and conceding six runs in the seventh inning to fall 10-9 in game two.

In game one of the doubleheader Pfeiffer was paced offensively by Hannah Jackson and Sadie Saine who each went 2-for-4.  Jaclyn Boever also contributed by going 2-for-3 in the 4-1 loss.

Pfeiffer tied the game up at one apiece in the top of the third as Rachel Crowder poked an RBI single through the left side to bring home Jackson from third.

The Falcons relinquished the lead for good in the bottom of the frame as the Braves scored two earned runs on three hits.

Sam Jarmusch fell to 6-8 on the season as she picked up the loss pitching six innings giving up four earned runs on five hits.

In the second contest, the two teams doubled their combine hit total as they combined for 29 hits in game two.

Five Falcons hits resulted in two runs in the top of the first inning as Julie Bullington got things started with an RBI double to center field to bring home Saine.  Following the double, Crowder began her strong performance with a RBI single to cap the inning with another run.

Pfeiffer captured two more unanswered runs in the top of the second inning as Jackson singled to first base with runners on the corners, bringing home the Falcons third run in Boever.  Saine connected on a sacrifice fly after the RBI single to stretch the Pfeiffer lead to 4-0.

The Braves controlled the next four innings as they put together five base hits to score three unanswered runs and cut the deficit to one.

The Falcons exploded for a five run sixth inning behind four hits.  With runners on second and third, Saine roped a two RBI double to straight away center as she pushed the lead back up to three runs.  Very next batter was Cecilia Dew who also connected on a double to center field bringing home Saine from second.  After Dew advanced to third on the throw home, Bullington popped a sacrifice fly to left field as Dew scored to give the Falcons the 9-3 advantage.  The rout was not over as Crowder belted a ball to straight away center, her second homer on the year.

Pembroke got one run back in the bottom of the frame as they scored one run on three hits.

Jarmusch came in to relieve Sydney Poole in the top of the seventh as the Falcons had a five run lead, what looked to be enough.
However, the Braves had a different game in mind as they surged behind a six run inning to down Pfeiffer in the bottom of the seventh inning.  Pembroke crossed the plate for three runs before the first out was recorded.  With bases loaded, Wilson flew out to left field for a sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to one.  Very next batter reached on a fielding error to tie the game at nine apiece.  After loading the bases, Jarmusch walked Jackson so bring home the winning run.

Crowder led the way offensively in game two as she went 4-for-4 with one run and two RBIs.  Dew and Jackson both went 3-for-4 with one RBI.

Sydney Poole received the start on the mound as she lasted six innings and gave up four runs, three earned, in the no decision.

Jarmusch picked up her second loss on the night as she gave up six runs, three earned, on four hits; dropping her record to 6-9 on the season.

Pfeiffer returns to action Saturday, April 12 as they travel to Erskine to compete in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
