Baseball Drops High Scoring Contest at Newberry

Box Score

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Pfeiffer baseball team dropped a slugfest Tuesday against the Newberry Wolves by a final score of 10-7.  With the loss, the Falcons fall to 26-18 overall while Newberry improves to 25-21.

Pfeiffer had a chance to strike first as they had bases loaded with one out.  The Falcons stranded the runners on base after striking out and grounding out to end the top of the first.

The Wolves took advantage of the missed opportunity as they claimed the early edge over Pfeiffer.  Newberry jumped out to a 5-0 lead after scoring five runs on five hits.

Pfeiffer did not let the second inning threat go to waste as they edged closer to Newbery.  With runners on the corners and none out, Kevin Price singled to center bringing home the Falcons’ first run.  Pfeiffer risked a double steal as Price sneaked in to second but John Elwood was thrown out at third.  Following a fly out to center, Cole McGraw brought Price home with a double to right center to cut into the deficit 5-2.

The Falcons squeaked another run out in the top of the third inning to cut into the Newberry lead.  The lone run came off the bat of Dalton Lindley as he roped a hard single to bring home Izzy Perez from third.

The Wolves did not budge as they stretched their lead back out to five runs.  Three runs crossed the plate on three hits and one Pfeiffer error as the Wolves edged ahead 8-3 to conclude the third inning.

The Falcons soared back into the game as they were able to muster together three runs in the fourth inning.  With runners on the corners and one out, Tyler Summers singled to right field, bringing home Jon Gray and cutting the lead to four.  Very next batter was senior Matt Wade who belted a double to left field, scoring both runners from first and second, as they now trailed 8-6.

The games next run came in the bottom of the sixth inning as Newberry scored one run on one hit and one Falcon error, expanding their lead back to three.

The Falcons had a chance to gain a run in the top of the seventh with runners on second and third with two out.  However, a pop fly to deep left field stranded the two runners on base.

Pfeiffer was able to earn one run back in the eighth however, as Perez hit a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing home McGraw.

Newberry closed the door in the bottom of the eighth as the Wolves pushed across one more run on two hits.

Craig Jacobelli was called to start the game as he only lasted three innings, giving up six earned runs on nine hits.

The Falcons were led offensively by McGraw who went 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.  Summers and Price also went 3-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored each.

Pfeiffer returns to action Wednesday, April 16 as they play host to Francis Marion at 3:30 p.m.
