Box Score

MISENHEIMER, NC – The No. 9 Pfeiffer women’s lacrosse team (12-3) ended its regular season in victorious fashion with a 12-10 win over Dowling (11-4) on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Falcons now shift their attention to the Conference Tournament which begins on Friday, April 25.

33 seconds into the contest, Pfeiffer’s Katherine Athens scooped up a ground ball and etched her name in the Pfeiffer record books. With that ground ball, Athens became the school’s all-time leader in the category, passing Brenna Clark’s previous career record of 214. Athens finished the game with six ground balls and five draw controls, while causing three turnovers.

Ashleigh Kassab tied her season-high with five goals and added an assist for a six point afternoon. Sarah Daly recorded a hat trick and finished with one assist as the Falcons have won 12 or more games in three of the past four years.

Cassidy Wilson improved to 6-2 on the season as she stopped nine shots. Tina Fey made two saves in the losing effort for Dowling.

Kassab started the scoring 4:17 into the contest as the junior netted her first goal of the game. Dowling would surge ahead with three straight scores to take the early 3-1 lead. However, the Falcons had the answer with three unanswered goals of their own. Kassab scored the first and Kristi Korn and Gracie Herbert followed to put Pfeiffer ahead 4-3. Dowling’s Kelly DiFede knotted the score at 4 with 5:46 left in the half. As the first half neared its end, Dowling was whistled for consecutive yellow cards, giving the Falcons a two player advantage. Daly connected at the 1:49 mark to put Pfeiffer up by one. However, Kim Geiger scored for Dowling with 33 seconds to play as the Golden Lions were a player down. The half would end in a 5-5 draw.

Pfeiffer scored three of the first four second half goals to seize momentum. Korn, Daly and Kassab put the Falcons ahead and Pfeiffer never looked back. The Golden Lions cut the lead to one on three different occasions but the Falcons had an answer each time. Kassab scored three times in the final 30 minutes and then assisted on Daly’s goal that iced the game with 2:17 to play. Stephanie Athens also scored in the half on a free position shot.

The five scores on the day gave Kassab a team-high 42 tallies on the season. Daly finishes the regular season as the team leader in assists with 15. Katherine Athens ends her final regular season with 58 ground balls, 74 draw controls and 49 caused turnovers.

Pfeiffer is the No. 2 seed in the Conference Carolinas Tournament and has earned a bye to the semifinal round hosted by Limestone.
