Athens Wins Second Straight Defender of the Year Award; Women's Lacrosse Places Eight on All-Conference Teams


High Point, N.C.- The Conference Carolinas announced its 2014 women’s lacrosse award winners in between semifinal contests of the conference tournament at Limestone this afternoon. For the second consecutive year, Pfeiffer’s Katherine Athens is the Defender of the Year. Pfeiffer placed six players on the All-Conference First Team and two more on the Second Team.

Athens etched her named in the Pfeiffer record books as she became the school’s all-time leader in caused turnovers and groundballs during her senior season. Athens led all of Division II with 49 caused turnovers, which is a single season school record. Athens finished the regular season with 74 draw controls and 58 ground balls and added two goals and six assists on the offensive end.

Kristi Korn, Ashleigh Kassab, Sarah Daly, Athens, Britton Muir and Cassidy Wilson were named to the All-Conference First Team, while Stephanie Athens and Ashley West garnered Second Team All-Conference honors.

Kassab finished sixth in the conference with 42 goals scored and her 51 points were eighth in the league. Wilson led Conference Carolinas with a 55.1 save percentage and posted a league-best 61.1 save percentage in conference games. Daly was sixth in the conference with 15 assists and added 21 goals scored. Korn’s 32 goals and 37 points were second on the team and Muir was second to only Athens in caused turnovers in the conference with 35.

Freshman Stephanie Athens finished her rookie season with 24 goals and 11 points and grabbed 24 ground balls, while West caused 23 turnovers on the year, which was fifth in the conference.   

Conference Carolinas All-Conference Women’s Lacrosse Teams were determined by vote from each head coach of participating institutions.  Nominations are collected and then voted upon by ballot and tallied to determine First Team, Second Team, Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year, and Coach of the Year award winners. Awards were presented at the Conference Tournament Championship Semifinals hosted by  Limestone College as the top seed in this year’s tournament. This year's award winners are as follows:
