| Washington DC---#11 Pfeiffer University improved to 9-1 with a 119-111 win over host Columbia Union College. Five Falcons scored in double figues led by DeMario Grier who scored 29 points. Logan Call added 28 points and 5 rebounds. The Falcon's pressure defense forced 31 turnovers, with 21 coming on Falcon steals.
The game started evenly with the scored tied at 9 after four minutes of play. The Falcons then went on a 13-2 run to take command. Two free throws by Tavares Cooper gave Pfeiffer their biggest lead of the half at 18, 38-20, with 8:54 to go until halftime. A three-pointer by Craig Thomas gave the Falcons a 53-37 lead with 3:17 to go but Columbia Union came storming back to tie the game at 59 at the break. Pfeiffer came out fast in the second half scoring the first eight points to grab a lead they would never lose. DeMario Grier hit a "3" to give the Falcons their largest second half lead at 11, 74-63, wih 18:13 left. Columbia stayed close as the Falcon lead mostly remained between 6 and 8 throughout the half. Columbia made a run late in the game to cut the margain to 1 at 107-106 with only 2:47 to go. However, Pfeiffer went 12 of 14 from the free throw line over the final 2:28 to seal the victory. Grier had 29 points and Call 28. Tavares Cooper scored 19 points and had 5 rebounds. Thomas Carr addded 14 and Robert McGriff scored 12. In all 10 different Falcons scored. Pfeiffer outrebounded Columbia Union 48-41 and forced 31 turnovers. Pfeiffer will next play Monday when they travel to CVAC rival Barton for a 7:30 pm game. |
