Pfeiffer Falls to Erskine
Sunday, 10 February 2008
The Pfeiffer men's basketball winning streak came to a screeching halt Saturday and the Falcons were defeated 109-101 at Erskine. The Falcons had won 10 consecutive games and not lost in over a month. This defeat was quite similar to their last at Barton on January 7th. Erskine shot an incredible 15-26 from the 3-point line and shot 30 more free throws than the Falcons. Erskine came out firing and went 9-15 from the three in the first half in taking a 53-38 lead at the break. The Flying Fleet did not cool off much in the second half shooting 6-11 from behind the arc. Pfeiffer got down by as many as 21 points but never gave up, scoring 63 points in the second half but could get no closer than eight points. The Falcons were 27-43 (63%) on two point shots and 20-23 from the free throw line but just 9-29 from 3-point range. The Falcons shot just 23 free throws to 53 attempts for Erskine.

Pfeiffer was led by Jeff Pettiway and Thomas Carr who had 18 points each. Pettiway scored his, on only nine field goal attempts and Carr made six 3-pointers. Logan Call had 14 points, Robert McGriff 12 and Chris Woods had 11 points on 4-5 shooting and had nine rebounds.

"We did not play bad, Erskine played great," said Pfeiffer coach Dave Davis. "We had hands in their faces and they seemed to make everything. Erskine has really been struggling to score this season and they took it all out on us today. We played better in many ways today than we have during several wins this season. I was incredibly proud of our guys for staying the course and continuing to fight through adversity. We played maybe our best offensive half of the season in trying to comeback in the second half but they would not miss and we really needed them to. We defended their best two players incredibly well earlier this year at Pfeiffer, but today Wright was 7-10 from the 3-point line and scored 27 and Taylor had 18. Erskine got eight other 3-point shots made by guys who have not made shots all year. At Pfeiffer, we know we are going to get people's best shots and credit Erskine for playing an unbelievable game. The 3-point line can be a incredible equalizer and our loss today and last month at Barton came at the hands of some rarely seen shooting. Road wins are very difficult in our conference and it will not get any easier as we play five of our final seven away from home."

The loss puts Pfeiffer currently ranked #5 in the East Region, in 2nd place in Conference Carolina's at 12-3 and 16-5 overall. A Falcon win on Saturday likely would have moved them to a #2 ranking in the East. Pfeiffer's next game is Wednesday at Lees McRae.
