Pfeiffer women's tennis team won two important CVAC contests this weekend at Barton and Mt. Olive. On Friday, the Falcons traveled to Barton where they easily defeated the Buldogs 8-1. All three doubles won easily followed by straight sets wins by all singles players except for Andrea Stroup who lost to last year's CVAC Freshman of the Year, Chelsea Hseih.
Less than 24 hours later, the Falcons took on the preseason #3 pick, Mt. Olive. The Falcons started slow in doubles with all three doubles going down 2-6, 3-5 and 2-5 in the early games. The #3 doubles team of Juliana Reyes and Heather Smith started the comeback by winning 6 straight games to give the Falcons the first point of the match. #2 doubles, Mia Bobrowski and Patty Dominquez tied their set at 7-7 and then won the next 2 games to take the second point. Within one minute, Andrea Stoup and Samantha Thomas completed their comeback with another 9-7 win to pace the Falcons in what may be the biggest comeback in doubles in Falcon history!
Singles play was also intense with the Falcons winning quickly with Patty Dominguez at 2 and Mia Bobrowski at 3. Andrea Stroup, playing with a bad back lost at one but Juliana Reyes secured the final point by winning 6-0, 6-1. Heather Smith fought a tough match but fell 5-7 in the second and then Samantha Thomas won hers in 3 sets for a final 7-2 victory.
Coach Sunbury said, "This was a great weekend for Falcon tennis and the doubles play was outstanding once we realized we could beat them. Our goal had been to beat the preseason #3 pick, Mt. Olive, as we felt we were stronger and shouldn't have been picked 4th. Our next match against Queens will also be good as they were picked to tie with us."
The Queens match will be Tuesday at Pfeiffer followed by the final home match on Thursday against Anderson.
