August 29, 2006Newberry defeats Pfeiffer 3-1 NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College earned a 3-1 win over the Pfeiffer Lady Falcons in women's soccer action at the Newberry College Soccer Complex Tuesday. Newberry's Elisa Alvarez scored the first goal when she recived a low cross from Lauren Carbonell 20 yards from goal. Alvarez put the ball in the lower right corner past Pfeiffer goalkeeper Jennifer Lindow to open the game's scoring. The Lady Falcons responded in the 15th minute with the leg of Maria Reis. After Megan Blevins earned a free kick from roughly 30 yards out on the left wing, Reis blasted a shot off the underside of the crossbar that Newberry goalkeeper Danielle Beckerle was unable to stop, tying the match at 1-1. With time running down in the first half, Brooke Tumblin netted a goal in the 43rd minute. Mandi Butler found Tumblin with a through ball, and Tumblin chipped the ball into the net from 10 yards out to put Newberry ahead, 2-1 at halftime. Another goal for Newberry came just 4:16 into the second half. Brady passed it on to Butler and Butler made sure the goalkeeper had no chance to stop it with a low, powerful shot to the the right. Newberry outshot Pfeiffer for the game 27-12. Newberry also had more corner kicks, 6-2. Pfeiffer had more fouls, 14-12. Maria Reis had Pfeiffer's only goal on four SOG. Jennifer Lindow recorded 10 saves in goal. Pfeiffer will return to action Saturday when they host UNC-Pembroke at 4:00 pm.
