STUDENT-ATHLETES HOST "DRY NIGHT"
Misenheimer, NC -- On Friday, March 20, 2009 Pfeiffer University’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) held a campus wide “Dry Night,” an evening of alcohol-free activities to show classmates everyone can have a good time without drinking and raise money for a worthy cause.
In the wake of several area tragedies, including fatalities involving college students who have consumed alcohol, Dry Night organizers wanted to promote substance-free activities while also benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Pfeiffer students saw a national trend and then acted locally to bring about a positive change to help each other make responsible choices. At the end of the night, $1,464.39 was collected for Make-A-Wish.
Student-planned alcohol-free social and recreational activities were offered from 7 PM to 11 PM in Pfeiffer’s Merner Gymnasium. The highlight of the evening was the Mr. Pfeiffer pageant, an amusing and light-hearted competition that included categories such as talent, evening and team wear, a Q & A, and a “best pick up line” contest. All contestants answered a series of questions pertaining Make-A-Wish. All fun and games aside, contestants agreed they were happy to help raise money for Make-A-Wish and hope to continue supporting similar foundations in the future. Other featured events were dodge ball, a pie-eating contest, a pizza feast, and several games with prizes. A ten-dollar donation to Make-A-Wish allowed attendance to all events for the entire night, and bought a Dry Night/SAAC T-shirt.
The SAAC worked collaboratively with various student organizations, departments, and staff at Pfeiffer in an effort to make this event successful. Sponsors included North Stanly Automotive, Wal-Mart, Vac & Dash, and Papa John’s.
