MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Sophomore Alyssa Wombwell scored the only goal on Wednesday afternoon leading the Pfeiffer Lady Falcons to a 1-0 non-conference victory over the visiting USC-Aiken Pacers. With the win, Pfeiffer remains unbeaten all-time against the Pacers at 5-0-1. Overall, the Lady Falcons improve to 2-1-1 while USC-Aiken falls to 1-2.
In a quiet first half of play, both teams would have a handful of corner kicks and scoring opportunities being unable to cash in on any of those situations. USC-Aiken had a couple of early corner kicks within the first 15 minutes of play as a pair of shots by Carly Minx (Greensboro, NC) and Lindsey Mann (Conyers, GA) were turned away by Pfeiffer goalkeeper Jaime Alcala (Fredericksburg, VA). The Lady Falcons Lindsay McQuade (Uxbridge, MA) and Ashley Hawkins (Madison, NC) would have shots kicked aside by Pacer net minder Nicole Westphal (Springfield, VA).
After a couple of early fouls in the first five minutes committed by USC-Aiken, Pfeiffer would keep momentum up for Wombwell’s goal in the 50th minute. On a touch pass from teammate Brianne Cleary (Huntingtown, MD), Wombwell would take the shot on a tough angle from the right side of the field. From about eight yards out, Wombwell would sneak the shot past Westphal just inside the right post for her team-leading third goal of the season.
Unbeaten on their home turf in the early campaign, the Lady Falcons will return home this Saturday, September 12th in the Conference Carolinas opener against Belmont Abbey. The women kick off a doubleheader of action at 2:00 p.m. following by the men against Belmont Abbey at 4:00 p.m.
