MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Belmont Abbey scored three first half goals en route to a 4-2 Conference Carolinas victory over the Pfeiffer Lady Falcons on Saturday afternoon at N.E. Lefko Field. Connie Axiotis scored a pair of goals in the win as the Crusaders improve to 2-1 overall, 1-0 in CC play. Pfeiffer drops to 2-2-1, 0-1.
Pfeiffer had the early chances in the first half with three shots in an 11 second span during the 10th minute. Ashleigh Rhoads (Palm Bay, FL) had the middle shot of the three sandwiched by a pair of Kirsten Bartsch (Leesburg, VA) attempts. The Crusaders got on the board with their first shot of the afternoon as Alana Ryczek took a cross from Nicole Voets and found the back of the net for an early 1-0 lead in the 15th minute.
Less than three minutes later, Axiotis would put Belmont Abbey up two with her first goal of the season right at the 18th minute on a left shot to the back right post. Both teams would strike in the 36th minute for a 3-1 halftime score in favor of the Crusaders. Kristin Foster found the nylon with her first of the season on a takeaway, which led to her breakaway goal. Alyssa Wombwell (Grand Blanc, MI) would score her fourth goal of the season just seconds later, much to the way Belmont Abbey tallied their first goal. After the initial corner kick by Kaylie Lawing (Weston, FL), Lawing got the ball back and found Wombwell on the second cross for the goal.
Each team would trade second half goals as Pfeiffer brought the match to a one-goal contest on Megan Blevins’ second tally of the season. Rhoads picked up the helper to make a 3-2 game. Belmont Abbey would take advantage of an errant pass by the Pfeiffer defense just 22 seconds later as Axiotis intercepted the pass and registered her second goal of the day. Pfeiffer managed a season-high 22 shots, 13 on goal in the loss. Crusader goalkeeper Kelsey Lovell made 11 saves in the win.
The Lady Falcons return home on September 26 during homecoming weekend at Pfeiffer for a Conference Carolinas matchup with the Anderson Trojans. The women kick things off at 12noon while the men follow at 2:00 p.m.
