BADIN, N.C. – Catawba College leads 14 teams after day one of the 2009 Lady Falcon/McNairy Invitational at the Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point. The Indians conquered the 5,922-yard, Par 72 layout with a score of 310 (+22) leading USC-Beaufort by three and Carson-Newman by five. Host Pfeiffer stands in a tie for fifth with California University of Pennsylvania after a day at 324.
Carson Newman senior Sarah Jane Sinard had the low round of the day shooting a one-under par 71 (34/37) to finish atop the individuals leader board on Monday. Catawba’s Kelsey Babos, who picked up the lone eagle of the day with a three on the par-5 11th, is one shot back after an even-par opening round of 72 (39/33).
Kelli Nakano of USC-Beaufort was the only other women’s golfer to come in with a side of nine in red figures. Nakano put a one-under 35 back nine together to finish third overall with a 74. Wingate’s Ashley Denton and California-PA’s Maria Andrea Lopez finished with identical sides of 37 and 39 totaling 76, respectively.
Rene Kelly of Pfeiffer carded a team-best 77 (38/39) to stand in a tie for fifth overall, as did Dianne Luke of Cal-PA, while eight other golfers broke 80 with a total of 79 in round one.
The second and final day of the 2009 Lady Falcon/McNairy Invitational will begin with a 10:00 a.m. shotgun start at the Old North State Club.
