WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS QUEENS 3-0 IN HOME OPENER

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Thanks to solid defense all night long, the Pfeiffer Lady Falcons were able to secure their first conference victory of the season with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-18) sweep of the Queens Royals on Tuesday night in Merner Gym. With the win, Pfeiffer improves to 4-6 overall, 1-1 in Conference Carolinas while Queens falls to 3-8, 1-1.

In set one, Colleen Wands (Apex, NC) would help serve the Lady Falcons to an early 6-1 lead on a couple of kills by Jordan O’Bryant (Reidsville, NC) and Brittany Dickens (Raleigh, NC). Pfeiffer would get out to its largest lead of the opener with another kill from O’Bryant to make it 18-7 late in set one. Queens would get as close as 23-15 on a kill by Allison Williams (Rougemont, NC) but a service error by Williams two points later would give Pfeiffer the 25-17 win.

A kill by Kristina Mordini (Freeport, IL) got the Lady Falcons on the board to start set two before Vanessa Gerig (Towanda, IL) helped serve Pfeiffer to another quick lead. Gerig, thanks to a kill by Lauren Dickens (Raleigh, NC), an ace and a pair of Royals errors, the Lady Falcons found themselves up early again at 5-1. Set two would go back and forth before three straight attack errors by Queens gave Pfeiffer a 19-13 advantage. Gerig and Mordini would each register another kill for a 22-16 lead before the next two of three points would be given to Pfeiffer on a pair of hitting errors committed by Royals outside hitter Erica Mazur (Waxhaw, NC).

The third and final set began with the Lady Falcons misfiring on a couple hitting attempts as Queens took their first lead of the match at 3-2. Williams would tack on another kill for Queens at 9-9 before Pfeiffer would pull away for good. Abbie Ovbey (Mt. Gilead, NC) would pick up four of her six kills in the final rallies to help secure the 25-18 set three and match win.

Brittany Dickens led both sides offensively with nine kills. Brittany Harvey (Matthews, NC) had eight to pace Queens. The Royals were unable to get anything going on the night offensively hitting -.019 for the match. Pfeiffer used 57 defensive digs and a hitting percentage of 15% to come out victorious in their 2009 home opener.

Pfeiffer will welcome in a pair of Conference Carolinas matches this weekend with the Anderson Trojans on Friday night and the Erskine Flying Fleet on Saturday. Game time on Friday is set for 7:00 p.m. while Saturday’s action gets underway at 1:00 p.m.
