MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Thanks to a hitting percentage of 25%, the Pfeiffer Lady Falcons were able to make quick work of the Erskine Flying Fleet in a 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-18) sweep in Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Merner Gym. Kristina Mordini (Freeport, IL) led all offensively with a dozen kills on the day. With the win, Pfeiffer stays unbeaten at home improving to 6-6 overall and 3-1 in the conference. Erskine falls to 3-10, 1-3.
Erskine took their only lead of the match with the first couple points of set one. Kills by Larz Chabra (Mt. Pleasant, SC) and Alicia Bragg (Rock Hill, SC) put the Flying Fleet up 2-0 before back-to-back kills by Mordini got the Lady Falcons and the offense rolling from there. Victoria Parrish (Henderson, NC) picked up three kills in a four-point span to put Pfeiffer up 9-4, before Mordini and Parrish, along with Abbie Ovbey (Mt. Gilead, NC) and Brittany Dickens (Raleigh, NC) would throw down kills the rest of the way leading the Lady Falcons to a 25-15 set one win.
Pfeiffer wasted little time in set two getting out to a rapid 11-2 head start forcing Erskine to burn an early timeout. Mordini picked up a pair of kills in the stretch while Dickens served six-straight times with an ace and three Flying Fleet errors. Erskine would creep back into set two on a kill by Allison Albers (Goodhue, MN) and four-straight errors committed by the Lady Falcons to get within four at 18-14. Pfeiffer however, would pull away as a kill by Kaci Markham (Asheboro, NC) began the final stretch run for the home team coupling with another kill by Mordini and four more errors by Erskine led to a 2-0 match advantage.
The misfiring for Erskine continued to start the third and final set as Vanessa Gerig (Towanda, IL) served up the first seven-straight points with two more kills by Mordini, an ace and a handful of more Flying Fleet mistakes. Again, Erskine would make a mini-comeback on another kill by Albers putting them within three at 8-5. Ovbey’s third kill in the next length of ten points would separate Pfeiffer once again to lead 14-9 late in the third set. Dickens and Mordini registered the final two kills of the afternoon starting at 16-10 before Kathryn Hobson (Asheboro, NC) came off the bench to chalk up the final kill of the day and a 3-0 win.
Pfeiffer gets back to Conference Carolinas action with three matches on the slate for next week. Tuesday begins the action in a road trip to St. Andrews to take on the Knights at 7:00 p.m. The Lady Falcons return home next Thursday night and Saturday afternoon for homecoming weekend action against Limestone and Converse.
