MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Matt Cargile and Scott Mitchell scored goals in the final 21 minutes, but Mount Olive’s rally came up short as the regionally 10th-ranked Trojans fell to Pfeiffer 3-2 in Conference Carolinas men’s soccer Tuesday at Amon Field. The loss was the Trojans’ first at home this season.

Kash Knight scored Pfeiffer’s first two goals, while Luke Vernon had two assists.

Mount Olive (4-3-0 overall, 1-2-0 Conference Carolinas) was down 3-0 when Frank Boateng played a long service from midfield to lead Cargile past the Pfeiffer defense. Cargile shot from the top right of the box to pull the Trojans within 3-1 at the 69:03 mark.

The Trojans mounted a furious attack late in the match as Murilo Pelegrino fired a shot from the top of the box. Pfeiffer goalkeeper Alex Moreno deflected Pelegrino’s shot, but Mitchell put home the rebound to make it a one-goal game with 11.7 seconds left. Mount Olive had possession deep in the Pfeiffer half when time expired.

Pfeiffer (4-3-0, 2-1-0) broke a scoreless tie midway through the first half when Renato Barbosa played a long service to Knight. Knight dribbled and scored from 15 yards out to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead at the 23:18 mark. Pfeiffer outshot Mount Olive 9-3 in the first half, but Trojan goalkeeper Zac Scott recorded four of his six saves in the first half to keep it a one-goal game at the half.

Knight scored on a breakaway goal at 56:20 to extend Pfeiffer’s lead to 2-0. Alex Landim converted a breakaway at 67:07 as Scott had to come off his line and Landim scored into an open net. Vernon assisted on both second half goals.

Mount Olive would answer with a goal less than two minutes later, but the Trojans’ rally came up short.

Prior to Tuesday’s match, Mount Olive had held five of its first six opponents to a single goal and had not allowed more than two goals in a match.

The Trojans outshot Pfeiffer 7-6 in the second half. Moreno finished with three saves for Pfeiffer.

Mount Olive kicks off a three-match road trip Friday as the Trojans travel to Salisbury, N.C., to take on Catawba in non-conference action. Match time is 7 p.m. Pfeiffer plays host to nationally 11th-ranked Anderson Saturday at 2 p.m. in a Conference Carolinas match-up.
