LAURINBURG, N.C.— Pfeiffer University used a balanced attack and took advantage of 36 hitting errors by host St. Andrews Presbyterian College en route to a 3-1 (25-20, 25-18, 17-25, 25-18) Conference Carolinas volleyball victory on Tuesday evening in Harris Court.
The Falcons won their fourth consecutive match to catapult over .500 with a 7-6 overall record while improving to 4-1 in the conference. The Knights drop their second straight, dipping to 7-7 overall and 2-3 in the league.
Pfeiffer hit .118 for the match while St. Andrews was held to just a .031 hitting percentage. The Falcons also posted 10 total team blocks.
Sophomore Heather Bolwerk (Appleton, Wis.) recorded her second double-double of the season for the Knights with 13 digs and 12 kills.
St. Andrews held leads of 9-2 in the first set and 15-12 in the second set but Pfeiffer rallied back both times to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match. The Falcons rattled off 10 straight points in the opening frame to leapfrog into the lead before holding on for the five-point win. Pfeiffer hit .355 in the second stanza and used a 13-3 run to cap the period with a seven-point win.
The Knights would not go down without a fight, jumping out to a 13-6 lead in the third and never looked back to force a fourth set. St. Andrews led by as many as 10 points before cruising to the eight-point victory.
Pfeiffer responded by winning the first three points of the fourth set and maintaining the lead throughout the final act. After doubling up the score at 16-8, the Falcons maintained at least a five-point advantage for the remainder of play before closing out the match with another seven-point win.
The tandem of senior Galina Podolsky (Raleigh, N.C.) and freshman Jessica Himalstein (Fort Myers, Fla.) both put down nine kills for the Royal Blue & White. Podolsky added a match-high three aces and four total blocks.
SAPC freshman Kelly Stine (Fort Collins, Colo.) set new season-high marks of 27 assists and six total blocks. Senior Courtney McDonald (Leander, Texas) had a team-high 20 digs. Junior Elysia Tiegs (Woodstock, Canada) tallied six kills and four block assists.
Senior Brittany Dickens (Raleigh, N.C.) led the Falcons with 10 kills, eight digs, and three block assists. Junior Kristina Mordini (Freeport, Ill.) and freshman Jordan O’Bryant (Reidsville, N.C.) each added seven spikes. Mordini finished with a team-high nine digs. Freshman Vanessa Gerig (Towanda, Ill.) chipped in with 21 assists and classmate Abbie Ovbey (Mt. Gilead, N.C.) produced a match-high six block assists.
St. Andrews heads to South Carolina for a pair of Conference Carolinas tilts this weekend when they visit Erskine College (Due West, S.C.) on Friday at 7 p.m. and Anderson University (Anderson, S.C.) on Saturday at 2 p.m. Pfeiffer next entertains league rival Limestone College on Thursday at 7 p.m.
