MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Alicia Mote led three Mount Olive players in double figures with a match-high 14 kills, but the Trojans fell from the ranks of the unbeaten in conference play with a 25-21, 28-26, 25-19 loss to Pfeiffer in Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball Friday at Kornegay Arena. The Trojans, who also suffered their first home loss of the season, dropped into a tie for second place in the conference standings, a half-game behind Pfeiffer.
Mount Olive (7-13 overall, 7-1 Conference Carolinas) broke away from a 12-12 tie in the first set as kills by Mote and Racey Bartley highlighted a four-point run for the Trojans. But Pfeiffer (11-6, 8-1) came back with six unanswered points during a 10-2 run, highlighted by back-to-back aces by Kaci Markham, to take a 22-18 lead. Mount Olive got as close as two points, but Pfeiffer held on to take the first set.
The second set saw Mount Olive rally from a three-point deficit as kills on consecutive points by Caitlin Skislak helped give the Trojans a 20-16 lead. But Pfeiffer took advantage of Trojan miscues to score six of the next seven points and regain the lead. Mote’s kill put Mount Olive back on top 24-23, but Jordan O’Bryant answered with a kill for Pfeiffer as the Falcons saved a set point. Both teams would save a set point before Abbie Ovbey broke a 26-26 tie with a kill and a block to give Pfeiffer a two-set lead.
Exactly one week earlier, Mount Olive rallied from a two-set deficit against Lees-McRae to move into sole possession of first place in the conference standings. But another comeback was not in the cards this time.
Pfeiffer built an 18-12 lead in the third set after Markham again served aces on consecutive points. Markham finished with five of Pfeiffer’s 11 aces. Mount Olive pulled within two as Mote had four kills during a 6-2 Trojan run. But O’Bryant and Brittany Dickens combined on two blocks during a match-ending 5-1 run to give the Falcons the victory.
Bartley finished with 11 kills and three blocks for Mount Olive, while Christiane Maul added 10 kills. Joanie Werling finished with 41 assists to go with three blocks and two aces. Maul and Mote finished with eight digs apiece.
