MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Pfeiffer University wrapped up its 2009 women’s volleyball regular season with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-17) sweep over visiting Coker on Friday night inside the Merner Gym. The Lady Falcons finish the regular season with their third-straight 20 win year at 20-11, 15-3 in Conference Carolinas play. Coker, who wraps up their campaign Saturday at Queens, falls to 4-26, 2-15.
Playing in the last home regular-season match of her career, senior Brittany Dickens (Raleigh, NC) put the Lady Falcons up early with five-straight serves as a kill by freshman Jordan O'Bryant (Reidsville, NC) and three Cobra errors gave the hosts an early four-point advantage. Dickens’ back-to-back kills gave Pfeiffer their biggest lead of the first set at 16-6. Coker junior Kristin Teets (West Columbia, SC) tried to rally the Cobras back late, but a kill by Kathryn Hobson (Asheboro, NC) and Kristina Mordini (Freeport, IL) gave the Lady Falcons a 25-19 set one win.
Set two went back and forth until the Lady Falcons were able to pull away late once again. Dickens served a half-dozen times early thanks to an ace and four more Coker miscues. Abbie Ovbey (Mt. Gilead, NC) and Mordini each had a pair of kills to put Pfeiffer up as much as five at 15-10. Erin Gray (Sneads Ferry, NC) picked up three kills in the final four points to put Pfeiffer up 2-0 in the match.
Set three was all Pfeiffer from the start as Dickens served five-straight points with two more kills from O’Bryant and another kill by senior Victoria Parrish (Henderson, NC). Colleen Wands (Apex, NC) had a stretch of five service points as an ace, kill by Mordini and kill by setter Vanessa Gerig (Towanda, IL) helped the Lady Falcons pull away at 21-15 before a fitting kill by Dickens and Gerig finished off the Cobras.
Mordini led all offensively with a match-high 12 kills. Gerig helped the Lady Falcon offense get rolling with a season-high 33 assists in a three-set match. Ovbey picked up a pair of solo and three assisting blocks on defense apart of 7.5 team blocks. Pfeiffer will host a first-round conference tournament match at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
